Ugly Betty is America’s version of Columbian telenovela soap opera Yo soy Betty la Fea by Fernando Gaitan. It is an American comedy-drama television series developed by Silvio Horta, premiered on ABC last 2006, filmed in New York that ran a successful two seasons in the US.

The show revolves around Betty Suarez portrayed by America Ferrera, a 22 year old Mexican American woman from Queens, New York who greatly lack fashion sense which is against the career path she had come across. She was put in the world of fashion when she landed a job at MODE, a high fashion magazine based in Manhattan which is owned by publishing empire of the wealthy Bradford Meade (Alan Dale).

Daniel Meade portrayed by Eric Mabius, son of Bradford Meade has just assigned as the Editor-in-Chief of MODE right after the death of Fey Sommers (Bradford’s mistress). Ugly Betty was hired then, to curb Bradford’s habit of sleeping with his assistants. Eventually the two got along and became friends, and look after each other as they deal with their professional and personal issues.

But Ugly Betty is not some fairy tale story without the culprits. Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) is out to take the Bradford’s down. She schemes to seize control over the Bradford’s family company, and thereby allowing her loyal friends to take ridicule on Betty’s physical appearance.

The original version had its successful run as well on different foreign language all over the world, and the US version may be just right to make the realistic view clearer to audience.
